Celebrating a nation’s symbols – through fashion

Sometimes fashion is a matter of national pride, and this pride was often homaged and quite literally sent down the runway.

For the fashion show for his spring-summer 1982 women’s ready-to-wear collection, French designer Claude Montana dressed models with creations inspired by the French flag – in the iconic colours red, white and blue.

The decorations and accessories also referenced the history of France, with cockades and headpieces that reminded the ‘uniforms’ of the fighters of the revolution.

The show was cheerful and the atmosphere happy: a real celebration of a nation’s history through its most recognisable symbols. The show took place at Jardin d’Acclimatation, Porte des Sablons, Bois de Boulogne: check out some of the most iconic looks, photographed by Paul Van Riel.
