The Musee Galliera, officially known as the Palais Galliera, is a renowned fashion museum located in Paris, France. Its rich history and cultural significance make it a gem in the world of fashion and art. The museum was named after the Duchess of Galliera, Maria Brignole-Sale, who bequeathed her Parisian residence to the city in 1879. Originally intended as a museum of decorative arts, the Palais Galliera underwent a transformation in the 20th century. In 1977, the decision was made to dedicate the museum exclusively to fashion, making it the first museum in France solely focused on the history of costume and fashion.

The Palais Galliera boasts an extensive collection of costumes and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present day. Its exhibitions showcase the evolution of fashion, highlighting the work of iconic designers, the cultural context of different eras, and the artistry involved in creating clothing. The museum underwent significant renovations in recent years to modernise its facilities and enhance the visitor experience.

The Palais Galliera stands as a testament to the cultural significance of fashion and its role in shaping societal norms and expressions of identity. Through its exhibitions, the museum continues to educate and inspire visitors about the artistic and historical dimensions of fashion. As it continues to evolve, the museum ensures that the legacy of fashion is preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

Embracing the digital age, Musee Galliera has made strides in making its collection accessible online, allowing a global audience to explore its treasures through digital platforms like Europeana.

This collaboration is more than the digitization of files; it’s a cultural crossroads where history meets innovation, in the context of the project CRAFTED.
